I think the best thing you can do for cardio is run. Run until you can't run anymore, then push yourself to run farther. Do this everyday your legs will let you. For maximum results, you can get one of those heart rate monitors that will let you watch to make sure you stay in your target heart rate range. I've tried a few different ones and my fav is the one with 2 pieces. It has the monitor that wraps around your chest and the watch that it corresponds with. Pretty cool technology. Also, remember to keep your breathing under control to maximize your run time.

I've been thinking about your question for a while, BJJaddict. I like the treadmill better than the road. You can control the climate, drag it in front of the TV, do it anytime, (if it is a home treadmill), and there aren't people watching. The road is probably a better workout though because I can never run as far on the road as I can on the treadmill. I think it has to do with shock absorption. The treadmill gives in a little, being a softer substance. The road has no sympathy at all. I don't know but it seems to me the treadmill would be easier on the joints. Probably the best thing would be to rotate between the two to keep from getting burnt out as easily.

You guys talking about running is making me want to go for a jog....Thank goodness that passed  There is a hill behind my house I run (been on a break for the last 2 months - gained 11lbs) I use(d) a two piece heart monitor kinda like the one you are talking about Ring Girl. Those things are great. Really lets you know what's going on.

I think they cost $40 or $50; not exactly pocket change, but they're worth it.

Road! The road is more at your pace, with more scenery, actually I would have to say dirt bike trail, we run a big hill that has tons of motorcycle trails through it, it is very tough!

For endurance run up hills... for more speed run down hills. That's right. Running down an incline stretches muscles you don't normally use and will increase leg speed as well as some good cardio work.
Interval training is weird... your fastest 100 meters or 200 meters or 800 meters is not your first or your second... amazing what loosening up your muscles can do.
Main thing... train hard

Is an eliptical machine beneficial for cardio? My wife does the eliptical for hours thats why I consider them feminine and feel kinda embarassed to be on one.

I love my elliptical; but I'm a girl  One of the reasons I love it is because it's super easy, especially on days I don't want to workout. I drag it in front of the TV and just go without having to think about a workout. It's great for burning calories because it involves all of the major muscles or you can focus only on your legs by not holding on, but in my experience, it doesn't do much for endurance. I used to workout on the elliptical for an hour first thing in the morning (usually 5-6 days a week). I thought I was doing good. Then my husband got me into running and I realized how out of shape I was. But it is a great calorie burner for days I'm feeling lazy.

yeah treadmill does very little for cardio ibn the sence of "gassing" during a fight IMHO. all a treadmills gonna get you ready for is a marathon...HILLS are where its at for all the reasons Jeff mentioned....dont rely on a treadmill in MMA....unless ur a cute ring girl, then it can slide  also sparring round are excellent, you can really feel "the heat" of the fight, and as great as this is for "controlling your "gas consumption", you can also fine tune your strategy by picking opponents that better your game plan for fight night. The most important thing to remember, cause usually people train their cardio super hard so they dont GAS during the fight, but 99% of people who gas have great cardio behind them,,,,they just forget to breathe and use it

Well if there is a football stadium near you with a track then you should go and run 5 laps for starters. In these laps run a half a lap then the bleacher steps on one side then a half a lap and the bleacher steps on the other side. This is great for conditioning and it gets ur body use to change of pace just like it goes through in a fight. Its truly a great cardio workout.
